Over the summer of 2015, Disney XD aired a five-part LEGO Star Wars series that focused on C-3PO and R2-D2. Their adventures post-Return of the Jedi, punctuated by recollections of their episodes IV-VI exploits, are given a lighthearted comic spin. The miniseries is called Droid Tales and it's now available on DVD.
Anthony Daniels, the voice of C-3PO in all seven Star Wars movies (plus a slew of side projects), once again lends his vocal talents to the on-going saga. It's a kick hearing Daniels send up the series (and character) that has made him famous, always playing it straight throughout Droid Tales, but adding a playful twist to select line readings. R2-D2 has gone missing and the search for the astromech droid provides the running plot thread for the five 22-minute episodes.
The jokes are consistently funny, making Droid Tales fun for older audiences as well as younger Star Wars fans. Some digs are more obvious others as C-3PO recalls the plot outlines of the first six big screen episodes. The more predictable jibes involve unpopular characters like Jar Jar Binks and the youngest incarnation of Anakin Skywalker, but the gags arrive so fast and furiously that they don't all have to land firmly. References to offshoots like the animated Star Wars Rebels series will leave less-devoted fans nonplussed.
All told, LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales adds up to nearly two hours of featherweight fun for fans.
