Phew! The title of Eagle Rock's latest Lynyrd Skynyrd concert video—Pronounced 'Lĕh-nérd 'Skin-nérd & Second Helping: Live from Jacksonville at the Florida Theatre—is an unwieldy mouthful. But it also presents a great party for fans of the Southern rockers. The 96-minute concert is now available on either DVD (screened for this review), Blu-ray, or a DVD/two-CD set available exclusively at Wal-Mart.
The show presented here offers an irresistible hook for Skynyrd fans: the band performs, in their entirety from start to finish, all the songs from their first two albums, (pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) (1973) and Second Helping (1974). It makes for an interesting set list, given that all-time classics "Free Bird" (which concluded the '73 album) and "Sweet Home Alabama" (the lead-off track from the '74 release) wind up hitting mid-set.
The Florida Theatre audience is clearly loving every minute of the show, which finds lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant in fine form. The punchy three-piece horn section (Jim Horn: alto sax, Paul Jackson: trumpet, Myles Moore: baritone sax) adds a lot of heft to the band's sound. Even in standard definition, Eagle Rock's audio/visual presentation is solid (the Blu-ray, of course, adds the benefit of lossless DTS-HD surround sound).
Bringing the disc's total running time to nearly two hours, there is a newly-filmed 20-minute interview featurette with that band that gives fans a peek behind the scenes. The "complete first two albums" format means the band digs out some rarely-performed deep cuts. So, even for fans who dutifully pick up every new Skynyrd title, Pronounced 'Lĕh-nérd 'Skin-nérd & Second Helping: Live from Jacksonville at the Florida Theatre delivers a very cool treat.
