Continuing the on-going Scooby-Doo! 13 Spooky Tales DVD series, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has issued the two-disc collection Field of Screams. Sometimes these sets are comprised entirely of previously-released shorts, while other times they are supplemented by all-new material. Luckily for Scooby fans, Field of Screams falls into the latter category. “Scooby-Doo! Ghastly Goals!” highlights the set since it’s a brand new, 22-minute adventure. Shaggy, Scooby, and the gang are faced with a dangerous beast that makes an unwelcome appearance at a soccer match. Additionally the set contains a dozen more vintage Scooby-Doo! cartoons, each with a sports motif.
The presence of new content makes Field of Screams an easy recommendation for fans. The rest of the set is of marginal value to anyone with an extensive collection of Scooby-Doo! on home video. The reason is simple: much of this stuff has been included on previous collections. Take “Night on Haunted Mountain,” another soccer-related story, for example. This is a relatively recent episode of Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated taken from the 2012 season two DVD release.
Perhaps most egregious of all the repeats is “Rocky Mountain Yiiiii!” because it was already included on an earlier 13 Spooky Tales release, 2012’s Holiday Chills and Thrills (the episode first aired in ’79 as part of Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo). The 1976 football caper “The Ghost That Sacked the Quarterback” was originally available as part of The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour: The Complete Series DVD (issued in 2006).
“The Warlock of Wimbledon” (1976) has popped up on a pair of previous Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! DVD releases, as recently as 2010 (The Complete Series). The exact same can be said for the fishing tale “The Beast is Awake in Bottomless Lake” and the water-skiing adventure “The Creepy Case of the Old Iron Face.” “The Fast and the Wormious” appears on DVD for the fourth time here. It’s part of the 2003 second season of What’s New, Scooby-Doo?. Part of that same series, taken from 2005 third season, is “Gentleman, Start Your Monsters!”
So what on Field of Screams is actually new to DVD? Three segments from the 1982 The Scooby & Scrappy Doo Puppy Hour make their DVD debut: “Maltese Mackerel/Yabba’s Rustle Hustle/Basketball Bumblers” (the first two segments were part of that series’ first episode, the last is from the third episode). In the same boat is another trio of segments—“Muscle Trouble/Alien Schmalien/Picnic Poopers”—from that show, also making their first DVD appearance. And two segments from the 1983 The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show, “Scooby and the Minotaur/Scooby Pinch Hits,” also debut on DVD here.
It’s a grab-bag, to be sure, but for those who just want a fun assortment from various eras of Scooby-Doo!, it’s a surefire pleaser.
